Google update "Buffy"

Well, a Google update is in progress and this one has been christened "Buffy" by thew WMW mods. Updates, of course, are a time when many bad sites get spanked by Google. Unfortunately, so do a few good ones.

Its too early to see what this update will do and, quite frankly, I'm just not up for watching the threads on this one. In all candor, knock on wood, I've never been affected in a fundamental way by any of them, and that includes "Big Daddy" and "Florida". And, on that subject (which sites blow in the winds of an update and which don't) I'll do a future post.

The only thing I've noticed so far about this update is that universal search seems to be rolling out a bit more. In one serps, I've noticed that google news results are being injected into the middle of page 1 (which I find very freaking irritating as it has the potential to divert organic traffic and also due to the fact that the news results just aren't that useful to searchers).

However, this could simply amount to testing. A few weeks ago, I had a minor freakout when google maps results were being slammed onto the top of certain geo-targeted serps. But that turned out to be testing as well, as least in my niches (of course, who knows how its going in other content niches).

I'm betting that the news crap will be gone in a few days. Till then, it will simply be a matter of watching to see how traffic levels are affected.

I noticed the Google was all over my websites two days ago I had just added the ad targeting code to my websites, and the change was noticeable. I really didn’t think too much of it, but I was thinking too much of it at the time.

I don’t understand Google at times they seem to have different definitions of whats considered bad depending on the website in question.

I’m going to see whether my new Mac site has changed in ranking.
I’m adding your website to my SEO Page your constantly dropping knowledge. Thanks I really appreciate that!

"different definitions of whats considered bad depending on the website in question."

Actually, if you read Matt Cutts and the webmaster guidelines they're fairly consistent.

IMO, the most important bits on that guidelines page are:

"Don't create multiple pages, subdomains, or domains with substantially duplicate content."

"Provide unique and relevant content"

"Don't participate in link schemes designed to increase your site's ranking or PageRank. In particular, avoid links to web spammers or "bad neighborhoods" on the web, as your own ranking may be affected adversely by those links."

That's why I've always thought it was a good idea to develop sites with safety in mind. Some people really push the envelope when it comes to link development (getting external links, interlinking sites, etc) and duplicate content. But, just because Google is catching them today, doesn't mean that Google won't catch them tomorrow. Each algo update seems to diminish the ability of seos to game the algo.

Now, what they really need to go after is subdomains like about.com

It's ridiculous that sites like about.com can leverage all those subdomains to boost one another in the serps.

That's good info and you know what I've read it several months ago, but I didn't pay too much attention to it.

Does Google view things such as blogrolls as a way to game the system? I participate in three photo trains on a weekly basis. I have quite a few subdomains, but they do have original content. I think I did copy an article that I wrote on Vegan Momma an dropped it into a post on another of my websites.
In regards to niche marketing am I correct to assume that it isn't necessarily what you think you're good at but more importantly what's "hot?"
